A car battery maintainer costs between €64.95 and €84.99, recorded in Belgium on 10 October 2026. A 95 Ah AGM battery fitted in a workshop costs €321.89. If your car sleeps for weeks on end near a socket, the purchase stands up. If it is driven every week, keep your money.
The sum is short. Choosing the device takes a little longer.
Do you need a battery maintainer on a rarely driven car?
Yes, once two conditions are met: the car stands still for several weeks, and a power socket is within reach of the cable.
A recent luxury car never fully sleeps. Alarm, telematics unit, keyless entry, seat memory: all of it draws on the 12 V battery with the ignition off. On a city car driven daily, the alternator makes up for it. On a coupe taken out eight times a year, nobody does.
Touring, the Belgian breakdown service, quoted by Le Moniteur Automobile, ranks the 12 V battery as the second cause of breakdowns in Belgium, behind tyres, and notes that it is often worn out after about five years. It adds that its call-outs have risen by 25% in two years. Those figures cover the whole fleet, not just rarely driven cars, and I found no Belgian series that isolates that case.
Three situations where I would buy nothing:
- the car is driven at least once a week on a trip that is more than a hop to the shops;
- the lock-up or underground car park has no socket, which is common in apartment buildings;
- the car is on an operating lease and will go back before the battery has aged, in which case the battery is the lessor's problem.
Battery maintainer or ordinary charger: what is the difference?
An ordinary charger fills an empty battery, then you unplug it. A maintainer stays connected for months: it charges, stops, watches the voltage and tops up in small doses when it drops.
The two devices recorded here do both jobs. CTEK describes an automatic eight-step cycle for the MXS 5.0, ending with float and then pulse maintenance. NOCO lists charging, maintenance and desulfation for the Genius5, and states that the unit can be left plugged in permanently.
The old transformer-type garage charger, with no electronics, does not know when to stop. That one is not left connected all winter.
Which battery maintainer should you choose for a car battery?
Four criteria, in this order, before looking at a brand.
- Battery chemistry. Wet lead-acid, EFB, AGM or lithium: it is written on the label. A charger designed for lead-acid is not connected to lithium.
- Capacity covered. A large saloon or premium SUV commonly carries 95 or 105 Ah. The charger must cover that figure, at least in maintenance mode.
- Ingress protection. IP65 on both models recorded, which suits a damp garage.
- The manufacturer's warranty, which tells you how many winters the device is meant to last.

Sources: CTEK and NOCO data sheets, prices at Autodoc and Auto5. The Auto5 promotion runs from 7 October to 29 November 2026. I have not tried any of these three devices: this table compares data sheets, not measurements.
For a 95 Ah lead-acid battery, the first two both fit. The NOCO costs €20.04 less and can handle lithium. The CTEK is covered for two more years.
How much does a battery maintainer cost against a new battery?
A quarter of the battery, at most.
Recorded on 10 October 2026 at Auto5: a Varta Silver Dynamic xEV, 95 Ah and 850 A, AGM technology, is listed at €291.99. Workshop fitting starts at €29.90, parts not included. Total: €321.89.
| Item | Amount | Share of the fitted battery |
|---|---|---|
| 95 Ah AGM battery, Varta, Auto5 | €291.99 | |
| Workshop fitting, floor price | €29.90 | |
| Fitted battery | €321.89 | 100% |
| NOCO Genius5, promotional price | €64.95 | 20% |
| CTEK MXS 5.0 | €84.99 | 26% |
| Porsche Charge-o-mat Pro | €181 | 56% |
The calculation is mine. Spread over the manufacturer's warranty, the CTEK comes to €17 a year over five years, the NOCO to €21.65 a year over three.
Two caveats. This total leaves out registering the new battery with the car's electronics, which some recent cars require and for which I found no public price in Belgium. It also leaves out the breakdown call on the morning the car will not start. In the other direction, no public source puts a number on how many years a maintainer adds to a battery. So I publish no gain in lifespan, only the price ratio: a fitted battery is worth almost four CTEK chargers.
At that price, it is not the charger that costs money. It is the battery you let run flat.
How do you connect a maintainer without disconnecting the battery?
Ten minutes the first time, two after that. The battery stays in place, the car stays locked.
- Open the car's handbook at the battery chapter. It says where to connect a charger: sometimes on the battery, often on remote charging points. Common mistake: going straight to the battery in the boot when the manufacturer provides terminals under the bonnet.
- Check the chemistry on the battery label and select the matching mode on the charger. Common mistake: leaving the default mode on an AGM or lithium battery.
- Connect the clamps to the car, red to positive, black to the earth point shown in the handbook.
- Then plug the charger into the mains, into a sound socket, with the cable unwound.
- Leave it alone. The indicator switches to maintenance when the battery is full.
- Before driving, unplug the mains first, then the clamps.
The order of steps 3, 4 and 6 is the one given in charger manuals. If yours says otherwise, your manual is right and I am wrong.
BMW, Mercedes, Porsche: is the brand's own charger worth the price?
At Porsche it costs €181, which is €96.01 more than the CTEK and 2.8 times the price of the NOCO on promotion.
The Charge-o-mat Pro is rated for 12 V lead-acid and lithium-ion (LiFePO) batteries, with two charging modes. Porsche publishes neither its charging current nor its warranty on the page I consulted. The useful information lies elsewhere: from types 992, G2 and E3 onwards, long-term maintenance charging goes through dedicated charging points, with an optional adapter sold separately. On a recent 911, the listed price is therefore not the full price.
The price comes from Porsche's online shop in its Monaco version, the only page I could consult on 10 October 2026. I could not check the Belgian shop's price.
For BMW and Mercedes-Benz, I recorded no public Belgian price for a brand charger on that date. I publish none.
My view as a former fleet manager: the badge charges nothing. The brand's charger makes sense when the manufacturer requires a connector the others do not have. Otherwise, the data sheet decides.
Lithium or AGM battery: does the same charger fit?
No, and it is the most expensive mistake on this shelf.
The CTEK MXS 5.0 is a charger for lead-acid batteries. Its data sheet does not mention lithium. The NOCO Genius5 has a lithium mode, which the manufacturer restricts to batteries with a management system, the BMS. Porsche sells its own charger for both chemistries, a sign that both exist in its range.
On a premium saloon or SUV, the 12 V battery is almost always an AGM or an EFB. On a lightened sports car, read the label before ordering.
Winter storage: the battery is not the whole job
The charger takes care of the battery and nothing else. Tyres, fuel and damp each need their own treatment, and the bodywork is prepared before the cover goes on: the method is in washing a premium car without scratching it.
If the stored car is more than thirty years old, registration weighs more than the battery in the annual budget. The rules are in the historic plate in Belgium, known locally as the plaque ancêtre or O plate. And if the battery does end up being replaced, the labour gap between dealer and independent is costed in premium servicing, dealer versus independent.
Ownership costs model by model are in the luxury car ranking.
