A BMW X5 air spring costs €61.77 at Triscan and €1,020.89 at VEMO. Same car, same function, same catalogue page: a factor of 16.5. Add two hours of workshop time, billed at €72.60 an hour by an independent garage in Modave and €160.82 by the BMW dealer in Huy, and the same repair starts at €206.97 and ends at €1,342.53. Air suspension is the one premium servicing line where the quote depends more on the box the garage ticks than on the failure itself.
How much does replacing an air spring cost?
Between €207 and €1,343 fitted, on a BMW X5. The part weighs more than the labour, which is unusual on a chassis job.
Here is the calculation, with the two surveys behind it. Part prices come from the Oscaro catalogue consulted on 30 August 2026, hourly rates from the survey published by RTBF on 18 February 2026 in the Huy area. The two hours of labour are a working assumption: no manufacturer labour-time schedule is public, and I do not publish a figure I cannot source.
| Scenario | Part | Labour 2 h incl. VAT | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independent at €72.60/h, Triscan spring | €61.77 | €145.20 | €206.97 |
| Independent at €84.70/h, Arnott A-2861 spring | €199.10 | €169.40 | €368.50 |
| BMW dealer mechanical at €128.36/h, Arnott spring | €199.10 | €256.72 | €455.82 |
| BMW dealer high-technicality at €160.82/h, VEMO spring | €1,020.89 | €321.64 | €1,342.53 |
€1,135.56 separates the top line from the bottom one. For the same car, off the road on the same day.
On air suspension, the quote is decided in the parts catalogue, not under the car.
Why does the same air spring go from €62 to €1,021?
Because the category bundles three different objects under one label: the bellows alone, the bellows mounted on its top mount, and the complete strut including the damper.
The Oscaro survey of 30 August 2026 on the BMW X5 returns twelve references for a single position.
| Supplier | Reference | Price on 30 August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Triscan A/S | 8720 11204 | €61.77 |
| ABAKUS | 131-02-108 | €61.79 |
| ABAKUS | 131-02-109 | €62.09 |
| Storm | 845189 | €87.04 |
| OPEN PARTS | ASP4003.00 | €161.08 |
| MAPCO | 40689 | €175.31 |
| CORTECO | 49430498 | €187.30 |
| Arnott Europe | A-2861 | €199.10 |
| Arnott Europe | A-2642 | €205.50 |
| MAPCO | 40690/2 | €551.90 |
| QUINTON HAZELL | EMR4803 | €653.22 |
| VEMO | V20-50-20005 | €1,020.89 |
A €62 part replaces the membrane. A €1,021 part replaces the membrane, the adaptive damper and the wiring. A dealer quote almost always picks the second, an independent lets you choose. The question to ask at the counter fits in one sentence: are you changing the bellows or the whole strut.
How much does an air suspension compressor cost?
€288.20 on a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, €726.89 on an Audi Q7. Both references are Arnott Europe, recorded on Oscaro on 30 August 2026.
| Model | Arnott Europe reference | Price on 30 August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz S-Class | P-2192 | €288.20 |
| Mercedes-Benz S-Class | P-3246 | €321.11 |
| Audi Q7 | P-2496 | €726.89 |
The compressor is rarely the original failure. It is the final one. An untreated leak on an air spring forces the pump to run continuously to compensate, until it burns out: Cars One describes exactly that chain in its note of 10 February 2025. An owner who postpones a €200 air spring ends up with a €200 air spring plus a €727 compressor.
Which premium models see this failure most often?
The ones with the deepest replacement catalogues, which is an indicator in itself. Oscaro and Aerosus list air springs for the Audi A6 Allroad, A8, Q7 and Q8, BMW 5 Series F11, 7 Series, X5 E53, E70 and F15, Mercedes-Benz S-Class W220 and W221, ML W164 and E-Class, Porsche Cayenne, Land Rover Range Rover P38, L322, Discovery 3 and Range Rover Sport, Volkswagen Touareg.
No public, dated and verifiable series ranks these models by failure rate on the Belgian market. I do not publish one, and I am wary of the rankings in circulation: they recycle forum posts, with no sample and no period. The only usable indicator is the depth of the spare parts catalogue, and it points at the large SUVs and long saloons of the 2005 to 2015 period.
No public and dated figure gives the service life of an air spring in kilometres either. The numbers circulating on that point are attached to no verifiable source, so I leave them out.
What is the gap between a dealer and an independent garage in Belgium?
From €72.60 to €169.40 an hour, VAT included. The survey run by RTBF around Huy and published on 18 February 2026 gives both ends of the chain.
| Workshop | Type of work | Hourly rate incl. VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Garage 1,2,3 Service, Modave | all | €72.60 |
| Garage Erdekens, Modave | mechanical | €84.70 |
| Garage MP, Modave | all | €84.70 |
| Auto 5 | all | €88.00 |
| Autosphère, Huy | general mechanical | €101.16 |
| BMW, Huy | general mechanical | €128.36 |
| Mercedes-Benz, Huy | repair | €159.70 |
| BMW, Huy | high technicality | €160.82 |
| Mercedes-Benz, Huy | electronics | €169.40 |
The same report cites a premium-brand quote falling from €6,685 at the dealer to €2,876 at an independent, a €3,809 gap on a single job, out of warranty.
Geography adds its own layer. GarageMetrics recorded on 10 November 2024 a common gap of 10 to 15% between Flanders, where rates run higher, and Wallonia. Over the 9.5 hours of a full overhaul, that is up to €120.70 more in the north of the country.
A rare point on this site: this repair depends on no regional tax at all. Neither the TMC, the Belgian registration tax, nor the annual road tax move by a single euro according to the state of your suspension, in Wallonia, Brussels or Flanders. Only the workshop hourly rate separates the three regions.
Does a full overhaul on an Audi Q7 cost more than the car?
It reaches a serious share of it. Four air struts and a compressor on a Q7 4L come to €5,319.38 at an independent garage and €6,082.47 at a premium dealer hourly rate.
Here is the detail, with Oscaro prices from 30 August 2026 and an assumption of 9.5 hours of labour, two per corner plus one and a half for the compressor.
| Item | Independent at €84.70/h | Premium dealer at €128.36/h |
|---|---|---|
| 4 air struts | €3,787.84 (VEMO V10-50-0002) | €4,136.16 (Arnott AS-3165) |
| Arnott P-2496 compressor | €726.89 | €726.89 |
| Labour 9.5 h | €804.65 | €1,219.42 |
| Total | €5,319.38 | €6,082.47 |
The RTBF survey contains no Audi rate: I use the BMW general mechanical figure as the recorded premium ceiling, for want of better. That specific line is therefore indicative, and I flag it rather than round it away.
€5,319 of suspension on a twelve-year-old SUV. The question is no longer whether to repair, but whether to keep.
Should air suspension be converted to conventional coil springs?
On a car out of warranty and meant to be kept, the trade-off holds up. On a car heading for resale within the year, it turns against you.
Arnott Europe sells coil spring conversion kits, presented as preassembled and bolting on without special tooling. The commercial argument is cumulative cost: on an ageing system, several components fail within a short window, and every workshop visit restarts the bill. No public, dated price for those kits was displayed as of 30 August 2026, so I publish none.
The downside sits on the resale side. A converted air suspension takes the car out of its factory configuration, and an informed buyer reads it that way on the used market. Conversion makes sense if you keep the car; it damages the file if you sell it. The logic is the same as every depreciation trade-off on premium cars: the spend is judged on what it protects at resale.
Any work on the suspension affects roadholding. Fitting is a job for a professional, not for an afternoon in the garage.
The bill lands in the second half of ownership
A Belgian owner keeps a car for 9 years, 9 months and 11 days on average, a figure put forward by the Steveny group to RTBF on 18 February 2026. Air suspension almost never fails in the first three years, so it never fails at the leasing company that paid for the car new. It fails on the second or third owner, the one who bought a 2013 Q7 for €14,000 and is handed a €5,319 quote.
The calculation to run before signing fits in one line: add the cost of a full air suspension set to the purchase price, and see whether the total still fits your budget. If the answer is no, look for the same car in its coil spring version. It almost always exists in the range.
Price ranges by model and annual taxes are in the luxury car ranking. The checks to run before buying a used premium car are set out in the traps of the Belgian market. And if the car is financed through renting, servicing sits inside the monthly payment and the calculation changes nature: that is the subject of what leasing a luxury car in Belgium really costs.
