On a BMW X5, a set of four Michelin tyres fitted and balanced costs €1,052.20 on 19-inch wheels and €1,620.80 on 21-inch run-flats, recorded in Belgium on 20 October 2026. Wheel diameter accounts for most of the gap. Run-flat adds 10 to 17% per tyre. Fitting, almost nothing.
How much does a set of 19, 20 or 21-inch tyres cost?
From €1,052.20 to €1,620.80 fitted, for the same SUV and the same tyre. €568.60 separates the top and bottom of the table.
To make the comparison hold, I froze everything else. One vehicle, the G05-generation BMW X5, whose factory wheels run from 19 to 22 inches. One tyre, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV, sold in all those sizes. One Belgian retailer, CentralePneus, checked on 20 October 2026. And Auto5's floor price for fitting: €25.90 for fitting and €21.36 for balancing per wheel, €189.04 for four.
| BMW X5 G05 factory fitment | Sizes | 4 tyres | Fitting and balancing | Total fitted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 19 inches | 4 × 265/50 R19 | €863.16 | €189.04 | €1,052.20 |
| 20 inches | 4 × 275/45 R20 | €947.96 | €189.04 | €1,137.00 |
| 20 inches, run-flat | 4 × 275/45 R20 ZP | €1,082.36 | €189.04 | €1,271.40 |
| 21 inches, staggered | 2 × 275/40 R21 and 2 × 315/35 R21 | €1,263.56 | €189.04 | €1,452.60 |
| 21 inches, run-flat, staggered | same sizes, ZP with BMW star | €1,431.76 | €189.04 | €1,620.80 |
The 20-inch set costs €84.80 more than the 19-inch one. Not much. Moving from 20 to 21 inches then adds €315.60 per set, and that is where the bill takes off.
Two items are missing from the table. Electronic pressure valves are excluded from Auto5's fitting price, which says so in writing, and no public price was shown for them on that date. The recycling levy, added separately by workshops, is not priced on the pages consulted either.
Why does 21 inches cost €400 more than 19?
Because of the rear axle. On 21-inch wheels the X5 runs a staggered fitment: 275 mm wide at the front, 315 mm at the rear. The 315/35 R21 costs €341.39 each, €125.60 more than a 265/50 R19.
The second cost is less visible on the invoice. Four identical tyres can be rotated between front and rear, wear together and are replaced together. Different widths cannot be rotated. Each axle lives its own life, and you buy in pairs at the pace of whichever axle wears faster, which means more trips to the workshop with no change in the unit price. A pair of 315/35 R21 run-flats at the rear costs €847.50 fitted on its own.
The brochure says 21-inch wheel option. The tyre fitter's invoice says €568.60 more at every replacement.
Does a run-flat tyre really cost more to replace?
Yes, by 10 to 17% per tyre on the sizes recorded. Per set, the gap reaches €134.40 on 20-inch wheels and €168.20 on 21-inch.
| Size, Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV | Standard | Run-flat ZP | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 275/45 R20 110Y XL | €236.99 | €270.59 | +€33.60 (+14.2%) |
| 275/40 R21 107Y XL | €290.39 | €339.39 | +€49.00 (+16.9%) |
| 315/35 R21 111Y XL | €341.39 | €376.49 | +€35.10 (+10.3%) |
The reinforced sidewall carries the car when pressure drops to zero. Michelin quotes up to 80 km more at no more than 80 km/h, figures that vary with load, temperature and road. Bridgestone gives the same limits for its RFT tyres and states that they should only be fitted to a car with a tyre pressure monitoring system.
The real expense comes with the puncture. Michelin allows a single repair by a professional, unless the tyre states otherwise. Bridgestone writes that repairing a run-flat is often difficult and leaves the decision to the technician. In practice, a screw in a 315/35 R21 run-flat often ends with a new tyre at €376.49, and sometimes two if the other tyre on the axle is already worn.
Before ordering a run-flat replacement, four checks:
- the marking on the sidewall, ZP at Michelin, RFT at Bridgestone, or Run Flat in full;
- the carmaker's approval mark, the star at BMW, to be matched if the handbook requires it;
- the pressure valves, which Auto5's fitting price excludes and which a workshop charges separately;
- the remaining tread on the other tyre of the same axle: below 3 mm on a summer tyre, replacing the pair makes sense.
How much does fitting a 20-inch or run-flat tyre cost in Belgium?
Between €19 and €30 per tyre, balancing not included. Run-flat adds a few euros, sometimes nothing.
| Workshop or network | Up to 19 inches | 20 inches and over | Run-flat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto5, tyre bought at Auto5 | €25.90 from 17 inches | €25.90 | €25.90 |
| Auto5, tyre bought elsewhere | €38.90 from 17 inches | €38.90 | €38.90 |
| vr center, Sint-Stevens-Woluwe | €25 excl. VAT from 19 inches | €25 excl. VAT | €5 more per tyre |
| Grip500 network averages | €19 for 18 and 19 inches | €22 | €24 |
Auto5 adds €21.36 of balancing per wheel and quotes "from" prices that vary by centre. At vr center, going from 18 to 19 inches costs €5 more per tyre, at €25 excluding VAT. Grip500 states that its partners set their own prices.
The only gap that matters in this table is for tyres bought online: €13 more per tyre at Auto5, €52 per set. On a set of 21-inch run-flats at €1,431.76, that is 3.6%. The saving is made on the tyre, not on the fitting. Labour rates at dealers and independents, which matter for the rest of the servicing bill, are compared in premium servicing, dealer versus independent.
Do the BMW star or the MO and AO markings push the price up?
Not always. But sometimes by €87.
Carmakers approve versions of tyres for their models: the star for BMW, MO for Mercedes-Benz, AO for Audi, an N followed by a number for Porsche. For the same Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV in 255/40 R21 102Y XL, CentralePneus listed on 20 October 2026:
| Version | Price |
|---|---|
| No marking | €281.99 |
| MO, Mercedes-Benz | €287.29 |
| AO1, Audi | €369.18 |
€5.30 more for the Mercedes version. €87.19 more for the Audi version, 30.9% extra for a tyre with the same name. Over four wheels, €348.76. I would check the handbook and the door pillar label before paying that premium, and ask the workshop whether the marking is required or only recommended.
Can you run standard tyres on a car delivered on run-flats?
In principle yes, on all four wheels, with a fallback in the boot. I found no Belgian rule that makes run-flats compulsory.
The saving is real: €168.20 per set on the 21-inch X5. So is the downside. A car delivered on run-flats often has neither a spare wheel nor room for one, and a puncture on a standard tyre leaves the car stranded. You then need a repair kit, which I do not price for lack of a recorded Belgian price.
Michelin recommends four ZP tyres and advises against run-flats on a car that did not come with them from the factory. Mixing two run-flats and two standard tyres on the same car is something I would not do: two sidewalls of different stiffness do not react the same way when one of them deflates.
How many kilometres does a 20 or 21-inch tyre last?
No public, dated source says. Neither Michelin nor BMW publishes a lifespan in kilometres for these sizes, and I do not repeat forum figures.
The legal benchmark does exist. Belgian law bans a tyre whose tread falls below 1.6 mm over two thirds of the tread surface, as Test-Achats, the Belgian consumer association, recalls in its page of 22 January 2026. The same organisation advises replacing a summer tyre at 3 mm and a winter tyre at 4 mm.
When do you have to replace your tyres in Belgium?
| Situation | What to do | Cost recorded on 21-inch run-flats |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1.6 mm over two thirds of the tread | Compulsory replacement; the federal police put the fine at €55 per bald tyre in January 2014 | €423.75 per rear tyre fitted |
| Summer tyre between 1.6 and 3 mm | Replacement advised by Test-Achats, as a pair on the axle | €847.50 per rear pair fitted |
| Puncture on a run-flat | 80 km at most at 80 km/h, then inspection; a single repair possible with Michelin | €376.49 per tyre if repair is refused |
| Uneven wear front and rear on a staggered fitment | Replace the axle concerned only | €773.30 per front pair fitted |
| Winter arrives | Nothing compulsory in Belgium | not priced |
The fine dates from 2014 and I found no more recent figure published by a Belgian authority. Fitted costs include Auto5 fitting and balancing at €47.26 per wheel.
21-inch wheels are also paid for in tax
The tyre is only the visible part. On a company car, the wheel option is part of the list price used to calculate the benefit in kind, known in Belgium as ATN (avantage de toute nature), for as long as you keep the car. The mechanism is detailed in how the company car benefit in kind is calculated.
Regional taxes react differently. Type-approved CO₂ can vary with wheel size, and it appears in box V.7 of the registration certificate. In Flanders, the registration tax, known as TMC (taxe de mise en circulation), includes that CO₂ figure. In Wallonia, so does the eco-malus. In Brussels, the TMC is based on power and age, and wheel diameter changes nothing. I publish no figure for the gap: it depends on the CO₂ value of each configuration, to be read on the certificate of conformity before signing.
The ownership sum fits on one line. If the tyres are replaced once while you keep the car, the 21-inch run-flat option costs €568.60 more than 19 inches. Twice, €1,137.20. A premium car that eats tyres also pays at resale, covered in luxury car depreciation. Other wear items specific to large SUVs, such as air suspension, follow the same logic. Ownership costs model by model are in the luxury car ranking.
