What the €5,000 figure actually covers
At that budget level, the car is no longer the bulk of the spend. It is the deposit. The real cost sits in the items that come back: road tax, roadworthiness test, reconditioning, insurance.
Premium-brand saloons and SUVs do circulate at that price on the Belgian used market. We publish no range: no dated and verifiable Belgian price series could be sourced as of 2 August 2026, and an estimate is worth no more than silence.
At that price, it is not the car that costs. It is the servicing.
Road tax, the incompressible item
The Walloon scale for the period from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 climbs in fiscal-horsepower steps: €107.18 at 4 HP and below, €134.11 at 5, €193.91 at 6, €253.31 at 7, €313.24 at 8, €373.16 at 9. Beyond that, it keeps going.
A fifteen-year-old premium saloon with a large six-cylinder engine sits well above that last step. Over five years of ownership, the tax alone can exceed the purchase price of the vehicle. That is arithmetic, not rhetoric.
Three brands, three workshop profiles
Mercedes-Benz — On new cars, the warranty is 2 years, extendable to 8. A vehicle long out of the dealer network has none of that left: every intervention is on you.
BMW — The brand's servicing package on its electric cars removes three invoice lines: engine oil, spark plugs, fuel filter. On an old combustion car, those three lines come back at every service, and they are not the most expensive items on the quote.
Lexus — On new cars, the brand offers cover that can run up to ten years or 185,000 km, subject to annual servicing at an official dealer. It is the only manufacturer here to tie warranty length explicitly to servicing regularity — a useful signal to read in a used car's service book.
What to check before signing
Three things, in this order: the fiscal horsepower of the vehicle (it fixes the annual tax for the whole ownership period), the region of registration, and the dealer service history. Mileage comes after.
